It’s hard to be patient, but I agree that it’s the wisest, if painful choice.

I also disagree with all 3 of Tomase’s suggestions.

Casas will come up when he’s ready to stay forever, but not before.

Love Montas, but he’s not THAT good, and the Sox rotation isn’t THAT bad. The time to contemplate adding a starter is after they get a look at Sale and have a better idea of whether Paxton will pitch this summer.

German is in Double A.

Hi Walt. Hope all is well with you!

Patience is always difficult. You just hope they don't dig a hole so big they can't get out in the meantime. Thanks for reading.

Any time you have Jackie Bradley Jr. hitting 5th, you're not going to fix much with a deal or two. Plus there seems to be serious blowback on the state of the balls and what the plate umps are calling. Give it another month, then clean the outhouse or get off the pot.

I think a month is probably the minimum, at least for bringing in help from outside the organization, Jim. Agree, JBJ shouldn't be starting, but he's been better than I expected so far and at least right now there are bigger problems.

Offense, as you mentioned, is down across the soggy baseball league. That said, not replacing Renfroe with a power bat in RF was supreme negligence. Throwing Arroyo out there is at the very least a malpractice case of some kind. Casas seems the easiest and most obvious move. Do you know what the magic date is to bring him up without sacrificing a service time jump? He should be up on that date.

1B and RF are lineup cornerstones. In the off-season I was dreaming of Castellanos and Casas, but my way back machine is all rusty.

Let talk radio be talk radio. I think they’ll be occupied today for other silly reasons.

As always, thanks for the newsletter. You crush it.

Thanks for the kind words, Freddy. The service time thing is complicated by the new CBA rules on players winning awards. If Casas comes up and finishes top 2 or 3 for AL Rookie of the Year or MVP he'll receive a full year of service time. But if he doesn't, then he'll only get the normal amount which depends fully on the time he spends on the major league roster.

Agree about RF. I keep thinking they must've thought they could do something else but then whatever it was fell through. Like maybe Suzuki changed his mind at the last minute or Conforto's injury threw a wrench into things. Or something else. But yeah, it's a suboptimal situation and what's more, it was that was as soon as the situation was created. It's not a secret now and it wasn't then.

That all said, there is time. It's super early. Thanks for reading.
