I really don't understand using Dermody at all and causing all of the drama when the Sox have Kluber and Pivetta in the pen. If the Sox don't trust Kluber, he should be DFA'd. They need the roster spot. How can you bench Verdugo for not hustling and keep Kluber on the roster?

This is a mediocre roster at best. We knew that going in, so 31-32 isn’t a surprise, but given the inflated optimism Bloom had coming into spring training it’s a bad look. Kluber never should’ve been signed and should be DFA’d now. But like Bloom’s weird attachment to Kaleb Ort and Ryan Brasier, he seems unwilling to cut the cord with a guy who clearly shouldn’t be pitching here. The losing is bad but the manner of losing— horrible defense, lifeless offense, poor pitching, and little depth emerging from the minors— I think seals Bloom’s fate. He needs to go and ownership needs to hire a proven winner.

I don't disagree on Bloom, feel like he's ok but not that much above replacement level if any. But who do you like as a proven winner?

I don’t think you can trade relievers for as much as you could 5 years ago, but I’m kinda ok with this team trading anyone not in long term plans and the Sox have some good relievers. And the top teams will need those pieces.

Anyway. I like this team mostly but I don’t mind them missing the playoffs as long as they don’t gut the team and go full rebuild.

I think that's the worry, Kevin. Another last place finish, even in the best division we've seen in decades (or thereabouts), could trigger wholesale changes in the Boston front office. And then who knows what the future holds! Thanks for reading!

Thanks Matt.

Last night’s loss definitely seems to have been a “last straw” kind of moment for the 2023 Red Sox.

Already this morning I’ve seen stories speculating about the job security of Cora and Bloom and which veterans the Sox might move at the trade deadline.

Not saying they’re unwarranted, but it’s mostly predictable overreaction from the usual suspects.

Things are definitely going sideways, but I want to focus on the Dermody debacle, which was a totally avoidable public relations disaster.

I can only assume the Sox thought no one would notice the homophobic tweets until after Dermody was DFA’ed, which he was always going be after his spot start.

And that was just plain stupid thinking.

Beyond the performance I just don't know what this team IS. I mean I guess this is a chance to see Bello and Casas develop, see what we have in Duran (which looks like, not an MLB regular). Yoshida has certainly adjusted to MLB as well as you could possibly hope and then some. But otherwise there are so many uninspiring vets and retreads and guys just hanging around.

I suppose we have more organizational depth than when Bloom started but other than that it's hard to really see a plan coming together, which is troubling this far in. As good as Mayer is supposed to be it's not like he'll single-handedly make this team a contender. You need a bunch of very good players for that and I don't really see the seeds of that team now.

I don't understand why people had any expectations for this team to be competitive. One look at the Opening Day roster should have made it obvious that this was a bridge to 2025. Treat this squad like you're playing with house money.

After last nights game, I have to wonder if Bloom and/or Cora will have jobs after the All Star break. Personally, I have not been as depressed as a fan since 2012 season with a manager I will not name.
